Today we  surveyed 20 people in
Pakuranga mall.

And we ask them a question - " Do you know
what Matariki is?" 14 people did not
know about matariki and 6 had some idea.

We happened to survey a teacher from a
different school even she didn't
know what matariki was. It shows that we need
to make people more aware of the Matariki
festival.

WHAT WE DO FOR MATARIKI.

I have made a poster to
explain how people celebrate
matariki in New Zealand.

There are lots of festites that take
place during this time.

It is the time to harvest and
plant new crop.

After harvesting people have
leisure  time to spend with
their whanau. They fish and fly kites.

Women weva and sing songs.
Grandparents share stories
about ancestors with the younger
whanau members.

People make bonfires and pay
tribute to Mother Earth.

Matariki Big Book- end of the story

Matriki was a cousin of Tama-Nui-Te-Ra,
the sun.

Matariki decided to go and bring
Tama-Nui-Te-Ra back.

So matariki and her six sisters set off
to meet Tama-Nui-Te-Ra.

They sang a mysterious, soothing healing
song until the sun was brightened
and warm again.

Tama-Nui-Te-ra felt better and soon got.

He came out of the cave and gave
this world warmth and light.

This is how the Matariki star
brought the sun back.

So every April when the
seven sister disappear from the sky
we know they have gone to rescue the sun.

They would be back Early June
and bring the warmth of the sun.
