The treaty of Waitangi

Greetings and welcome to my blog, today for one of my classes Literacy tasks we had to
explain what the Treaty of Waitangi is and how important it is to Aotearoa, with a total of 250-300 words count in it.

(Just a little short history about what the treaty of waitangi is)

The treaty of waitangi is the founding document of our country or in other words also known as

New Zealand founding document is a treaty which was signed back in 1840 on the 6th of february, it is an agreement between the representatives of the british crown and some Maori chiefs. The Treaty was signed

in The bay of islands and was led by William Hobson who was the representative of the British crown and also the first governor of New Zealand (This happened after the treaty was signed). The treaty of waitangi promised to protect Maori culture and to enable Maori to continue to live in New Zealand as Maori.

On the first day of signing the Treaty only about 40 chiefs signed the treaty and by September (8 months later) 540 signed the treaty.

Today the Treaty is widely accepted to be a constitutional document that establishes and guides the relationship between the Crown in New Zealand (embodied by our government) and Māori.

Why is the treaty of Waitangi so important?

The Treaty now means there must be respect between Māori and non-Māori. It is important that the laws

and rules today consider and respect both Māori and non-Māori ways of living.

The Treaty of Waitangi principle puts students at the centre of teaching and learning, asserting that they should experience a curriculum that engages and challenges them, is forward-looking and inclusive, and affirms New Zealand's unique identity.

Facts:

  • Hone heke was the first maori chief to sign the treaty

  • About 13 Maori women (chief) signed their name on the treaty

  • Most signed their name only on the Te reo Maori version of the treaty.

  • In 1974 it was announced that the 6th of February is officially a Public holiday in New Zealand.

  • The two missionary Henry Williams and his son Edward translated the English version of the treaty into Te reo Maori

White sunday in Niue

Every year on the second Sunday of May Niue celebrates white Sunday which for them is a christian festival for children. White Sunday is also celebrated on the same day as mother’s day. On this day children are given new white clothes to wear to the ceremony. Wearing white clothes signifies purity which for them is a result of believing that the lord Jesus died of our sins. On white Sunday children perform sermons and skits from the bible following with singing some church hymns. During that time Children often have to get up and say a bible verse and donation from family and adults to the church on the children's behalf. At the end of this event, a big feast is held which includes food like chicken, taro and sweets followed. Niue is very respectful to the christian ways of putting God first.

How Niue gets its name?

Kia ora and welcome back to my blog!! Today's blog-post is about how Niue gets its name?

Let’s go back to where it all began in the South Pacific ocean where captain James Cook and his crew first sighted Niue in the year 1774. It was said that James Cook made three attempts to the island but couldn’t because the native people declined James Cook wishes and that’s when James Cook Named the island “Savage island” because as legend has it, the native who greeted him were painted in what appears to be blood. For the last couple of centuries the name “Savage island” was then changed to “Niue” Which translates to behold the coconut.

How to make Takihi (Niuean Dish)

Fakalofa Atu and welcome to my blog, This week is a really special week because it is Niue Language week and for today's task we had to watch a video and write down how to make Takihi.

Takihi which is a well-known favoured dish back in the island of Niue. This Niue dish is kind of like a pudding in a main in one meal which only needs 3 ingredients that are Coconut cream, Taro and Pawpaw.

The way you make this dish is basically just layering thin pieces of Taro than Pawpaw on top of each other and once you get to the top you put coconut cream all over.

Discography and a short history about the New Zealand star Benee

Kia ora readers, today's blog post is about just like what the title says a Discography and a short history about the New Zealand star Benee. This presentation is part of my class NZ people and places project subject arts. I hope you'll enjoy this presentation and hope you'll learn something new from this : )

How New Zealand is governed

New Zealand is a democracy because of the way our system runs, the way New Zealand is governed works by voting which political party goes into power or voting who is going to be New Zealand’s next/new prime minister. When there is an election held, citizens or people living in New Zealand from the age of 18 years and over get to vote, this voting process only happens every three years in New Zealand. In this election voters will have two votes, first vote is for whichever candidate gets the greatest number of votes each electorate wins a seat in the parliament and the second vote is the party vote.

New Zealand's last election was in 2020 last year where New Zealanders had a total of 17 political parties to vote from. And in the end, the Labour party run by

Jacinda Ardern won being prime minister of New Zealand with a total

of 1,443,546 votes and 65 seats in parliament.

In parliament there are a total of 120 seats and in order to create a government

you’ll need 61 seats or more out of the 120 seats. Sometimes when parties don't

have the enough number of seats they combine with other parties to reach the number of seats needed to form a government. Just like back in the 2017 election

in parliament where Labour, NZ first and Green party joined seats and formed a government with 63 seats. (Labour had 46 seats, NZ First had 9 seats and  Green party had 8 seats.)

Sciecnce Topice 1 - what we know about Sciecnces?

Malo  e lelei and greetings to you all readers and today i will be blogging about my first day with Mrs sharma in Science. Mrs Sharma is a brilliant teacher in tamaki college who teachers Science, one of the tasks we did with Mrs Sharma was to written down all the facts we know about Science.

This is the Facts that I have written down :

  • About 70% of the world's surface is covered by water

  • Earth is the only planet in our solar system known to support life

  • Human teeth are just as strong as shark teeth

  •  Dogs have an amazing sense of hearing and can hear sounds at four times the distance than humans can

  • An adult elephant needs to drink more than 200 litres of water each day

  • An eagle’s eye are about four times sharper than the eyes of a human’s

  • One millions earths can fit in the sun

  • Your nose and ears never stop growing

  • A single bolt of lightning contains enough energy to cook 100,000 pieces of toast

  • The human brain takes in 11 million bit of information every second but is aware of only 40

Yeah that's all from me, I just wanted to share with you all some facts I know about Science and i hope you have learned something from any of these facts. And remember to Stay safe during this pandemic!!

Current events

Aloha and Welcome back to my blog, today i will be blogging about a article I read on Kiwi kids news. This Article is about Adams wins second Paralympic gold.

As we all know there is a big event going on in Tokyo called the Tokyo Paralympic and Adams who is the sister of Valerie Adams went on and represent New Zealand in the Women shot put.

And I'am Happy to say that Lisa Adams has won New Zealand’s second gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. She has also set a new Paralympic record in the F37 shot put, beating her rival Mi Na from China with a throw of 15.12 meters. And just by looking at the photos i could easily tell Lisa was really proud and happy, she also said during an interview that this was unreal. I was Really Happy for Lisa Adams after reading this article and i really love the stronger and unbreakable bond her and her sister holds.

A Lockdown cooking - Show & Tell !!!

Malo e lelei, and best greetings to you all. Usually every Friday the year 8 & 7 goes to tamaki college to learn about the different things that we are going to learn in college and the subject the year 8s are learning at the moment is cooking. And because of coronavirus which caused New Zealand to go into a lock down we cannot go to our cooking lessons. However you can always cook at home for yourself and your family. So we had a little task which was to cook breakfast for the family, which i couldn't see why not just do it and so I ask my siblings what they wanted to eat cause i have no clue what to make for them. And they all agreed to cupcakes, so i had to make it even though its not a breakfast type of food but i guess it will do, So yeah that's pretty much the whole reason why i baked cupcakes today and here's a presentation on how i baked them.

Percentages and Fractions

 Percentages and Fractions

Today Monday 16th of August my class and I did a little bit of math learning about Percentages and Fractions. The question we had to solve given from our teacher it says:

Miriama is making 'ei katu. 25% of the 'ei katu has pink flowers, 1/5 of it has yellow flowers, 10% of it has white flowers and he rest of the 'ei katu is made up of leaves. Show in Percentages or Fraction how many leaves were there to make the 'ei katu.

How me and my buddy Tiara solve it :

Percentages

So we know that 25% of the flowers are pink, 1/5 are yellow flowers and 10% is white flowers.

We first convert 1/5 into a fraction which is 20%, then add 20% + 25% + 10% = 55%

And a 'ei katu in Percentages is 100% because it a whole, so what we did next so 55% - 100% = 45%

So what this tells me is that 45% of the 'ei katu were leaves.

Fraction

For this we will have to first convert 25% and 10% into a fraction.

25% = 1/4

10% = 1/10

Then you'll have to add up 1/4 + 1/10 + 1/5 however if you know how to solve your fraction you'll already know that you can't. So you'll have to use your timetable and see if denominator in the fraction have a connections. And the number in the timetables the denominator has a connection with is 20 because 4x5=20 and 5x4=20 and 2x10=20.

(Here is a little drawing of part of the work to make it a bit easier for me to explain.)

In Fraction the Answer will be 9/20.

GOOD BYE :)

Viewing and Listening

aloha to you all!!! For the pass maybe 2 months my class and I have been reading a book written by Alan Gratz called Refugee. The reason why we are reading refugee is to know why refugee is a great book. And to put our self into the characters shoe to feel and understand the things they as refugee has been going through. Not only are we reading this interesting great book but this book was also chosen by our teachers to be our next Project Based Learning theme. And I already finished off one of the task in English.

Gymnastics session through Kelly's sport Zayde

 Gymnastics session through Kelly's sport

Kia Ora and greetings to you all, today I will be writing a summary on today's first ever gymnastics Session through Kelly's sport. Our gymnastic coach name Zayde taught us the important when it comes to Gymnastics such as being able to have an strong body position and using our arms for balance then taught us some body position and developed individual skill through 'Floor Work' such as the Tuck sit, Motorbike landing, angry cat, Happy cat, Straddle and the L sit. My personally favorite was the angry cat, the reason why I like the angry cat is because it has a really funny position. To do this angry cat position you first need to get down on your knees then both hands on the floor then you'll have to make your back go up while your face to looking at the floor and then hands and knees are on the ground.

Then we played a game where our whole class gets into a circle in our tuck sit position and in this game we would have to pass the ball in a circle, in order to pass the ball to someone you must use both feet while still staying in your tuck sit position. To me it was a bit hard having to lift up my feet to pass on the ball to the next person or when the person next to me pass the ball to me. However I felt like I put in a lot of effort into the game just by playing. Then after the game we played, Coach Zayde showed us how to do an handstand and we all try doing it our self. (Well I kind of try.)

Anyway that was I little summary, I hope you enjoyed!!!

Maths - Percentage

 Maths - Percentage

Talofa and greetings to you all, Today's blog post is about my summary on what happen in maths. We were buddy up into 4 different groups the questions that were given to use were regarding about Percentages.

What the Question says : What Percentage of the pizza would each of you have? Explain your thinking.

How my group and I solve it :  There are 8 people in my group including myself so because we have to find out the Percentage we as a group did this. In a Percentage the pizza equal 100%, so each of us would get 10% then 90% is taken away from the 100% and since there is only 10% left we took 1% away from the 10% then we would have 11%. But then their will be 1% left so what we did we half it between the 9 of us which is now 11.1% It took my group and I a while to solve this we had to recurring. But we ended up solving it together!!!!

Kiwi-can learning about emotions and feelings

Talofa and Greetings to you all, Today I will be blogging about my reflection on today's Kiwi can lesson.

The topic for today was emotions and feelings. Miss B our kiwi-can teacher started us off with a games called emotional statue, where you have to buddy have with 1 person (so their should  be only two of you in that group) and one person is the statue and the other is the creator. Miss B Calls out an emotion e.g. Happy and the creator has make their statue make an happy expression, So that is basically the aim of the game is for the creator to create an emotion on their statue body by their show of actions. Then we had an little talked about what are our emotions and feelings and in any case does emotions and feelings are the same thing. After our little talked about our emotions and feelings we did a bit of an acting. First thing Miss B told us was to "get into groups of 5 people then within those 5 people I will give you an emotions and you guys will have to acted it out however you like and then we all would have to try and guess what that emotion is." The Emotion my group and I was given was Lonely, And the acting we did within our group to show Lonely is when the teacher tells the student to pear up into groups of 3 people and one person in the class to left out. That was my group and I acting to show everyone the emotion or feeling of lonely.

So yeah that was my reflection on today's kiwi-can lesson, Hope you enjoyed.

Our biggest challenge

Here is a writing text using the LEER structure that we did as a class.
L- Lead sentence
E- Explain
E- Example
R- Relevance
Intro : Climate change is the biggest challenge of our lifetime. Centuries of pollution and
deforestation has led to global warming, rising sea and a plethora of natural disasters.
What is it, and what can we do to fix it?
Global warming : One measurable aspect of climate change is global warming.
Greenhouse gases get trapped in the atmosphere causing the global temperature to rise.
Carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide are the 3 main greenhouse gases. Solar energy
(heat/light) gets trapped in the atmosphere - this is the natural process of global warming.
Humans are making this global warming process worse by emitting lots of greenhouse gases
from factories. Global temperatures are rising - causing the melting of glaciers in Antarctica
and more natural disasters. IN the 1800’s, humans began the Industrial Revolution, resulting
in many factories being built all over the world. These factories emitted carbon dioxide and other
greenhouse gases. Humans rely on factories and transport (e.g cars, buses) which all burn fossil
fuels. In the last century, the global temperature has risen by 1* C.
Deforestation : Another devastating component of climate change is deforestation.
There are lots of human actions that are increasing global warming, which needs to be stopped
before we get to the point of no return.
Deforestation is caused when trees such as confires are milled for temper.
When forests are culled less oxygen is produced (as less trees exist) and more
carbon dioxide (CO2) is absorbed. This excess CO2 is then released into the
atmosphere contributing to the greenhouse effect. A famous example of
deforestation is the culling of trees in the Amazon rainforest. The amazon
rainforest is the biggest in the world, home to 390 billion trees. People are
cutting the native trees to plant palm oil and other food sources. The immediate
result of this is that animals' habitat is destroyed. The plight of the orangutan
is known around the world. They are a symbol of fighting against climate
change. The longer term effect is that certain species have become endangered
and even extinct. Damage to the land caused by agriculture is often permanent.
Saving the rainforest would help minimise the long term impact of global warming.
Agriculture : A third factor contributing to climate change is agriculture.
Agriculture is farming with animals. Cows produce a lot of methane through farting and belching which is a greenhouse gas. Agriculture requires huge amounts of land which could be used for forests/rainforests and as habitats for native species. Another damaging part of agriculture is the damage done to local waterways (E.g. rivers and streams) through the fecal matter and urine of those animals. The water gets
polluted and fish who live there die. In New Zealand, there are 26.6 million sheep
and 10.1 million cattle. If people ate less meat, we wouldn’t need so much land for agriculture and we wouldn’t be damaging local waterways as well.
Rising sea : Global warming is causing rising seas through the meeting of Antarctica and the arctic.
The largest concentration of ice on Earth is in the arctic (North homisplene) and Antarctica
(Southern tomisplene). In these places ice sheets and glaciers hold vast amounts of water.
Ice sheets are massive flat platforms that are made on ice, glaciers form over land. Solar
energy and greenhouse gases increase global temperatures which leads to these ice from melting,
This meltwater causes rising sea levels around the world, leading to increased flooding and coastal
erosion. A small island in the pacific which is directly impacted is kiribati. Kiribati is a lowing island
experiencing levels of flooding, high tides and coastal erosion. Kiribati is trying to save their island
by building new sea levels of coral. Kiribati cities are now becoming climate change refugees seeking
asylum in neighbouring couettes such as Australia and New zealand. Kiribati land, culture and native
wildlife will be lost forever. While global warming seems like a big problem for the people of Kiribati,
it is a matter of life and cleath.
Weather/ Natural disasters : The increasing frequency and severity of natural
disasters is the direct result of climate change.

How to fight climate change : There are many actions that can be taken to reduce
the impact of  climate change.
Some of these can be done by individual people, such as not using plastic bags, putting
your rubbish in the bin and recycling any plastic you use. Actions that every community
should take is to have lots of rubbish bin available, plants lots trees and native bushland,
use wind farms and solar panels where you can. At a national level, actions New Zealand can
take are planting more trees, conservation programmes for native species, introducing laws
and policies that limit overfishing and monitoring the deforestation of native timbers. Both
individuals and countries should actively be trying to increase the number of bees they have
in their land. The biggest change would be if globally, companies stopped burning fossil fuels
as this would minimize the greenhouse gases that are entering the atmosphere.
One scientific study found that only 100 companies are responsible for 71% of the world's
carbon emissions. There are four petrol companies (Exxonmobil, shell, BP and chevron) that
are the highest emitters in the world. Another thing consumers can look for is what products
they buy - some products use palm oil which is the reason for a lot of deforestation. People
should buy palm oil free products.
There are lots of ways both individuals, groups and governments can make a difference to
reducing climate change.
In concussion, climate change is a terrible problem that is the number 1 concern facing
our planet. If we do not take the action discussed, within a century our plant will have
irreversible damage and our children and grandchildren will not enjoy the world in  the way
we did. It is upto every person to make change.

Blood sugar - reading

Malo e lelei and welcome to my blog, today I will be blog a reading group task from to today. The book that was given was about diabetes, I learned a lot of new things by just reading it : ) I Hope you will learn something new too and feel free on giving me feedback on my work.

BEFORE READING:

  • What do you already know about diabetes?

  • What do you already know about blood sugar and insulin?

Before you read the story, write true or false next to each statement based on what you think right now.

Before reading i think

After reading I think

Diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar.

TRUE

TRUE

There is only one type of diabetes.

FALSE

FALSE

People with diabetes can live normal lives if they manage their insulin levels everyday.

TRUE

TRUE

Children with diabetes aren’t allowed to play sports.

TRUE

FALSE

ALL diabetics inject themselves with needles everyday.

FALSE

Read this text

DURING/AFTER READING

Write your own summary of page 2 using these words:

Sarah, camping, afraid of needles, water, diagnosed with diabetes, nurse.

Sarah’s life story

When Sarah and her family were on a camping holiday her family noticed something odd about Sarah. She was always getting thirty no matter how much water she drank, lucky her mum Raewyn was a nurse and she recognised this is a symptom of being diagnosed. So the family quickly headed back home and to the hospital. When she was diagnosed with diabetes, Sarah was most afraid of needles. At that time Sarah had no clue what diabetes was, the only thing she knew about diabetes was it was something big and that she would have lots of injections.

Fill in the blanks - highlight the word you put in in a bright colour. (Look at page 3 for help)

The pancreas is an organ that makes Insulin. Insulin moves around the body in the blood and its job is to move Glucose into cells so that we have energy to move around. Glucose comes from the food we eat. After we eat, our glucose levels go up. Our glucose levels fall when we exercise because we are burning energy. Diabetes is when the human body can’t control the amount of insulin in their Blood

Explain 3 key differences between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes in your own words.

What’s the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease. This means that the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the cells that produce insulin and the pancreas stops producing it. And type 2 diabetes is not an auto-immune disease. Nothing attacks or destroys the body’s insulin-making cells. It’s just that the body doesn’t use the insulin the way it should or it doesn’t produce enough insulin for the body's needs. And type 1 diabetes is not caused by eating too much sugar or any types of food, however type 2 diabetes is linked to being overweight, and being overweight is linked to not exercising enough and eating food that has lots of sugar in it.

Explain what mmol/L means, why people with Type 1 diabetes need to check this number and what they might do to raise or lower the number if they need to.

Millimoles is when you measure how much sugar/glucose is in your blood, Most diabetics need to be between 7/9 millimoles per liter

Use the text you have read, and Google if you need to, to respond to the following prompts.

Select 3 of the things you shouldn’t say to someone with type 1 diabetes.

Explain why people MIGHT say that AND think of 2 things you could say instead.

  1.  Is it because you eat too much sugar?

have something sweet to eat, but that's only if your blood level is low.

  1.   Why do you have diabetes?
